Iran to deploy pilgrims to Syria on a weekly basis

Under a deal signed with the Arab country during President Ebrahim Raeisi's visit to Damascus, Iran will begin sending pilgrims to holy Shia shrines in Syria.

Iran (IMNA) - According to an agreement struck earlier in the day with Syrian officials, Iran's transportation minister Mehrdad Bazrpash stated on Wednesday that 50,000 pilgrims will be brought to Syria from Iran each year.

The deal was one of 15 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed at Damascus' People's Palace in the presence of Raeisi and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Memorandums of Understanding will allow Iran and Syria to dramatically expand their commercial and economic connections now that the Arab country has emerged from more than a decade of conflict with foreign-backed insurgents.

According to Bazrpash, an average of 1,000 pilgrims each week would be able to travel from Iran to Syria to pay homage to the holy sites of Hazrat Zaynab (AS) and Hazrat Ruqayya (AS) in Damascus.

He stated that there will be three to five direct, regular flights each week between Iranian cities and Damascus, beginning in the next two months, allowing Iranian pilgrims to travel to Syria.

According to the minister, Iran and Syria also agreed to establish a joint bank and insurance firm to offer services to companies engaged in commerce between the two countries as part of the MoUs inked on Wednesday.

He stated that the two parties had agreed that until the joint bank is operational, two banks from Iran and Syria will process payments between businesses.
