Iran (IMNA) - According to the head of the Association of Iranian Airlines, Maghsud As'adi, introducing flights to Mashhad, Iran's second biggest city and home to a significant Shia shrine, is a top goal for Saudi Arabia.
As stated by As'adi, the aircraft route might assist Saudi Arabia's Shia community, which is headquartered in Dammam, the country's easternmost metropolis.
He believes the link would encourage Saudi travel to other Iranian towns, particularly natural areas in northern Iran.
The comments come only weeks after Iran's transportation ministry said that it had received an official request from Saudi officials for three regular flights between the two nations.
Last month, the ministry stated that the flights will be launched despite of existing agreements between Tehran and Riyadh about planes bringing Iranian pilgrims to the hajj rite in Saudi Arabia.
The strategy is based on a deal struck by China's mediation role in early March, which called for the reopening of the two Muslim countries' embassies by May 9.
