Iran loses $4 billion per year due to gasoline smuggling

According to conclusions of a research in the local media, widespread gasoline smuggling across Iranian borders causes an estimated $4 billion in annual losses for the country.

Iran (IMNA) - As reported by the fuel division of the Iranian Oil Ministry, the smuggling of diesel fuel from Iran has reached above 10 million liters per day, according to a report published on Sunday by the Fars news agency.

The data revealed that smugglers operating at Iran's southern and southeast borders get almost five million liters per day of gasoline delivered to cars in Iran.

According to estimations made by specialized government departments, at least 15 million liters of gasoline and diesel may be smuggled out of the nation every day, which would represent a $4 billion loss annually.

Iran loses $4 billion per year due to gasoline smuggling

Iran seized more than 52 million gallons of illicit diesel and gasoline between January and late March, a 250% and 69% increase over the same period the previous year, respectively.

However, it was stated in the report that the extremely low prices of gasoline and diesel have enticed many people living in Iranian border provinces to engage in fuel smuggling.

According to the survey, diesel fuel transferred to Iranian power plants for electricity generation accounts for roughly one-third of overall fuel smuggling from the country.
