Iran (IMNA) - Ayatollah Khamenei decided on Thursday to pardon or commute the sentences of 1,760 convicts, including those found guilty in courts of common pleas and Islamic Revolution tribunals, the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces, and the State Discretionary Punishment Organization.
On Thursday, Ayatollah Khamenei announced his intention to commute the sentences of 1,760 convicts, including those convicted by common pleas courts, Iran's revolutionary tribunals, the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces, and the State Discretionary Punishment Organization.
The Leader's decision followed a letter from Iran's Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei about convicts considered eligible for mercy by the competent judicial authorities.
Eid al-Fitr is a major religious festival observed by Muslims worldwide. It celebrates the end of the 29 or 30 days of fasting from sunrise to sunset during the whole month of Ramadan.
The event takes place on the first day of the 10th lunar calendar month of Shawwal, the commencement of which is determined by local religious authorities based on the observation of the new moon. In Iran, Eid falls on April 22 this year.
According to Article 110 of Iran's Constitution, the Leader has the authority to pardon or commute the sentences of detainees upon the proposal of the head of the judiciary.
Clemency does not, however, extend to all sorts of convicts, including those condemned for their involvement in armed conflict against the government, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, kidnapping, bribery, and embezzlement.
