Iranian mission in Saudi Arabia making arrangements for reopening of embassy

According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kan'ani, an Iranian team has arrived in Riyadh to discuss the execution of an agreement agreed between the two sides last month to reestablish diplomatic ties.

Iran (IMNA) - According to a statement released by Kan'ani on Wednesday, a "technical delegation" from Iran arrived in Riyadh at midday and was warmly greeted by Saudi authorities.

The Iranian delegation, he said, "will take the necessary steps to set up an embassy and a consulate general, as well as the permanent representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)," in two working groups in Riyadh and Jeddah.

"Efforts will be put forth to reopen and activate our country's representative offices before the annual Hajj days of this year," he added.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson further stated that Saudi Arabia's technical group, which arrived in Iran on Saturday, will depart for Mashhad tomorrow.

The development comes after a meeting last week in Beijing between the Iranian and Saudi foreign ministers, who emphasized the need of putting the reconciliation deal into action in order to build mutual confidence and security in the area.

It was the first official meeting of top diplomats in more than seven years, after China's mediation of a peace pact between the two Middle Eastern powers.

After many days of prolonged talks mediated by China, Iran and Saudi Arabia decided to reestablish diplomatic ties and reopen their embassies on March 10.

Following the signing of the deal, Tehran and Riyadh issued a joint statement emphasizing the need of respecting each other's national sovereignty and refraining from intervening in one another's internal affairs.

They agreed to put into effect a security cooperation agreement made in April 2001, as well as another agreement inked in May 1998 to increase economic, commercial, investment, technological, scientific, cultural, sports, and youth affairs collaboration.
