Islamophobic attack at mosque denounced by Canadian trade minister

Mary Ng, Canada's Trade Minister, has condemned an Islamophobic incident at a mosque in Markham, Ontario, in which a person desecrated a copy of the Holy Quran and attempted to smash worshipers with a vehicle.

Iran (IMNA) - An individual drove up to the Islamic Society of Markham (ISM), one of the oldest and biggest Muslim organizations in Markham, on Thursday. Once inside the mosque, he tore a copy of the Holy Quran and yelled racial and anti-Islamic epithets. He then tried to run over worshippers with his car as he left the building, according to a statement from the ISM.

The ISM is visited by thousands of believers, and the holy month of Ramadan has made the center considerably busier, according to the ISM.

Ramadan, which is regarded as the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar, is when the attack occurs.

Due to a sharp rise in hate crimes and Islamophobia in the 21st century, Canada is one of the world's top rising hotspots.

In the wake of the September 11 attacks, Canadians of Middle Eastern ancestry have also been especially singled out as victims and targets of Islamophobia.

Mosques have been vandalized and attacked physically as a result of islamophobia, including violence against Muslim women who are hijabi.
