Iran, Azerbaijan FMs debate approaches to address disputes in bilateral relations

In the midst of rising tensions between the two neighboring countries, Iran and Azerbaijan's foreign ministers held talks to explore approaches to overcome current misconceptions and concerns concerning bilateral ties.

Iran (IMNA) - On Friday night and Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Azeri opposite numner Jeyhun Bayramov had two rounds of comprehensive talks concerning advances in Tehran-Baku ties and other regional concerns.

They emphasized the significance of good neighborliness, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The senior Iranian and Azeri diplomats also highlighted the need of directing media campaigns in accordance with mutual interests.

After an attack on Azerbaijan's embassy in Tehran in January, ties between the two countries were broken.

Following the event, Azerbaijan shuttered its diplomatic post and evacuated workers in response to what it labeled a "terrorist act," with President Ilham Aliyev accusing the "Iranian establishment."

While an early inquiry pointed to "personal and family-related problems" as the assailant's motivation.

Azerbaijan designated four Iranian embassy personnel persona non grata on Thursday, alleging the diplomats engaged in "provocative actions" in the latest worsening of relations between the two countries.

The move occurred only hours after Baku announced the arrest of six individuals it alleged were affiliated to Iranian secret services and organizing a coup in the Caspian country.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kan'ani said in a statement on Friday that Tehran will take "diplomatic countermeasures" in reaction to Azerbaijan's hardline and unconstructive attitudes towards Iranian teachers and diplomats in Baku.
