Iran security officials seek stronger relations with UAE

On Thursday, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed met with Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), in Abu Dhabi.

Iran (IMNA) - They discussed "bilateral ties and measures of developing bridges of collaboration between the two countries in various fields to accomplish common goals" during the meeting.

The two also talked about "regional and international concerns and advancement of mutual interest, as well as the need of cooperating to support peace and cooperation in the region."

During talks with his Emirati counterpart on Thursday, Shamkhani described his visit to the UAE as "a meaningful foundation for the two countries to begin the next stage of political, economic, and security relations."

"By communication and engagement... we should endeavor to promote the security, peace, and well-being of the people of the region... while avoiding outsiders from playing a non-constructive role," Shamkhani said.

Several senior UAE officials were in attendance during the meeting, including National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who met with Shamkhani separately.

The UAE and other Persian Gulf governments suspended ties with Tehran in 2016 after Iranian protestors stormed Saudi Arabia's diplomatic missions in Iran in response to Riyadh's execution of Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.

Notwithstanding the political deterioration, the oil-rich UAE maintained close business connections with Iran.

Shamkhani's visit came after Iran and Saudi Arabia announced on Friday a deal mediated by China to end a seven-year diplomatic stalemate.
