Iran, Saudi Arabia agreed to re-establish diplomatic ties

Iran and Saudi Arabia have achieved a deal in the Chinese capital of Beijing to re-establish diplomatic ties and re-open embassies and bureaus, seven years after they were severed over a range of issues.

Iran (IMNA) - The deal was reached on Friday in Beijing following many days of heated talks between Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Ali Shamkhani and his Saudi counterpart. Iran, Saudi Arabia, and China declared the resumption of relations in a joint statement on Friday.

The statement was signed by Shamkhani, Saudi Arabia's national security adviser Musaid Al Aiban, and Wang Yi, director of the Chinese Communist Party's Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission.

After negotiations in February between Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing, Shamkhani has been holding rigorous talks in Beijing with his Saudi counterpart since Monday to find a final solution to the disputes between Tehran and Riyadh.

"As a consequence of the dialogue, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia decided to restart diplomatic ties and reopen embassies and [diplomatic] posts within two months," according to the joint statement.

The Iranian and Saudi foreign ministries will meet to "implement this agreement and put the procedures in place for the exchange of ambassadors," as stated in the announcement.

According to the joint announcement, Iran and Saudi Arabia emphasized the need of respecting one other's national sovereignty and refraining from intervening in each other's internal affairs.

They agreed to put into effect a security cooperation agreement made in April 2001, as well as another agreement inked in May 1998 to increase economic, commercial, investment, technological, scientific, cultural, sports, and youth affairs collaboration.

It stressed that Iran, Saudi Arabia, and China have stated their unwavering intention to make every effort to support regional and world peace and security.

Delegations from Iran and Saudi Arabia led by Shamkhani and Aiban met several times in the last five days as a result of Chinese President Xi Jinping's support for expanding ties between Tehran and Riyadh based on the principle of good neighborliness and his endeavors to host meetings between Iranian and Saudi senior officials.

Iran and Saudi Arabia also commended Iraq and Oman for their preparations to host the two sides' meetings in 2021 and 2022.
