Iran, IAEA Director-General meet in Tehran seeking progress on nuclear cooperation

Key talks between the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) and the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have taken place in Tehran.

Iran (IMNA) - IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi came to Tehran on Friday to meet with senior Iranian authorities over technical nuclear matters.

During his two-day visit, he is also scheduled to meet with President Ebrahim Raeisi.

Grossi was received at the airport by AEOI spokeswoman Behrouz Kamalvandi and later met with Mohammad Eslami, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).

Details of their conversation were not immediately available. Grossi's fourth visit to Iran since taking office in December 2019 comes ahead of the IAEA Board of Governors meeting on Monday.

Iran and the IAEA are at odds over a number of topics surrounding Iran's nuclear activities.

In a classified quarterly report, the International Atomic Energy Agency stated it discovered uranium enriched to 83.7 percent during an assessment of the Fordow nuclear site on January 22.

On Wednesday, Eslami denied the accusation, claiming that Iran's peaceful nuclear programs have not deviated.

"Regarding the 84% particle, which was a sample from the side of a tap in the procedure, the particle cannot be even seen with a microscope. What matters is the amount of material held after production," according to the AEOI.

Grossi's visit could help break the gridlock in discussions to restore the 2015 nuclear deal, technically known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Despite the IAEA's inability to inspect nuclear facilities in Israel, Iran has welcomed technical collaboration with the agency as seen by the inspectors' frequent trips to Iranian installations.
