Deliberate poisoning of Iranian schoolgirls under in-depth investigations

Iran's President Ebrahim Raeisi authorized Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi on Wednesday to conduct an in-depth investigation into the deliberate poisoning of schoolgirls across the country, then publicizing the information to assuage the concerns of families.

Iran (IMNA) - The directive comes as scores of Iranian girls from 26 schools are reportedly being treated in hospitals for poisoning following a wave of suspected toxic gas attacks.

Vahidi stated during a press conference on Wednesday that a meeting with officials from concerned authorities was conducted to follow up on the issue.

Iranian Interior Minister also accused foreign-based and "mercenary groups" of exploiting the crisis to wage psychological warfare and scare the public.

"Our adversaries are attempting to disrupt the country and instill dread in the hearts of our loved ones," he stated, referring to recent foreign media propaganda misrepresenting the country as insecure and against women's rights.

On Wednesday, Ahmad Vahidi told reporters that allegations of a specific chemical compound being identified were false.

According to Health Minister Bahram Eynollahi, who spoke on Tuesday, a special committee composed of the country's best toxicologists was formed to look into the matter, and their findings revealed that the toxicant used had "slight" effects.

On Tuesday, Alireza Monadi, the president of Parliament's education committee, said that the schools had been purposefully targeted and that 30 toxicologists from the Health Ministry had recognized the toxins found in the schools as nitrogen gas.

The first reports of school girls being poisoned surfaced three months ago in the city of Qom, roughly 80 miles southwest of Tehran.

Students reported tangerine-like smell and were hospitalized after experiencing trouble breathing, heart palpitations, nausea, and numbness of limbs.
