Mega revival project of Lake Urmia inaugurated by Iranian president

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi launched a mega project on February 24 to transfer water to Lake Urmia, raising hopes that the plan is expected to allay environmental concerns over the lake's drying up in northwestern Iran.

Iran (IMNA) - During the inaugural ceremony, he highlighted that attempts to revive the shrinking body of water must continue seriously during the inaugural ceremony, saying "The restoration of Lake Urmia is a national priority, and the water transfer project is the most important initiative in this regard."

The Iranian president also praised all engineers and contract workers for their hard work in completing the project on time and on budget.

In the first phase of the transfer project, 300 million cubic meters of water from Kani Sib reservoir dam to Lake Urmia would be transferred per annum through nearly 36 kilometers of tunnels and 11 kilometers of canals.

Raeisi continued by stating that his government is decisive to restore Lake Urmia, and that all administrative and executive authorities, particularly the Ministry of Energy, collaborated to execute the large-scale project.

Each year, 600 million cubic meters of water will be moved from the Kani Sib reservoir dam to the Naqadeh plain and the Lake Urmia basin during the second phase.

The water transfer project, dubbed the largest environmental project in West Asia, has been under development since 2015, however its completion was postponed at some point in time.
