Iran, China presidents call for JCPOA implementation, lifting sanctions

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have both called for all parties to fully implement the Iran nuclear deal and to lift all US sanctions against Tehran in a verifiable manner.

Iran (IMNA) - The Iranian and Chinese presidents reaffirmed in a joint statement issued at the end of Raeisi's three-day state visit to Beijing that the United States' unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is the root cause of the current stalemate in negotiations to reinstate the landmark agreement.

As a basic part of the JCPOA, the statement emphasized the necessity of lifting sanctions and safeguarding Iran's economic interests, stating that "All relevant sanctions should be removed in a verifiable manner to facilitate the full and effective implementation of the JCPOA."

Also, Raeisi and Xi expressed their vehement opposition to efforts by some countries to politicize the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) activities in executing the Safeguard Agreement.

The negotiations to revive the JCPOA have been stalled since August 2022 because of Washington's obstinate refusal to lift the sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic by the previous US administration.

The Iranian and Chinese presidents held in-depth discussions about regional and global developments as well as cooperation in all areas, according to the statement, and came to a number of broad agreements, including accelerating the implementation of a strategic 25-year partnership agreement between the two countries.

Iran and China signed a breakthrough comprehensive strategic partnership pact in 2021, defying US unilateral sanctions against the two countries.

The two sides highlighted the importance of peace and stability in the Persian Gulf for global security and energy flow, it said, adding that the Chinese side praised Iran's efforts in ensuring global energy security.
