Iran-China strategic cooperation pact; region's strongest arrangement

Ebrahim Raeisi was officially greeted by his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, after arriving in Beijing on a state visit.

Iran (IMNA) - In March last year, Iran and China inked a landmark 25-year comprehensive strategic cooperation pact in defiance of US unilateral sanctions against the two countries. The agreement formalizes the Sino-Iranian Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was launched during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Tehran in 2016.

It establishes the general framework for cooperation in the fields of politics, culture, security, defense, and international relations for the next 25 years. A high-ranking political and economic delegation led by the Iranian president arrived in Beijing on Tuesday morning at Xi Jinping's official invitation.

Before departing Tehran for Beijing on Monday, Raeisi told reporters that Iran and China have similar views on international unilateralism. Today, Chinese President Xi Jinping received his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raeisi, at the National People's Congress of China.

In the presence of the two presidents, senior officials from the two countries will sign important documents for expanding bilateral cooperation. This is President Raeisi's first trip to China since assuming office in August 2021.

Beijing and Tehran have a long-standing relationship, according to spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Wang Wenbin, who also noted that both parties have taken the "strategic choice" to consolidate and advance their bilateral ties.

The Chinese official emphasized his country's willingness to regard President Raeisi's visit as an opportunity to make further progress on the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement.
