Tehran to be turned into age-friendly city

"The elderly are one of the special members of society. Considering that the elderly population in Tehran is growing, the issues and challenges of aging in urban planning merit further consideration," the Director General Of Tehran Municipality's Health Department said.

Iran (IMNA) - "The development of the Tehran's Elderly Center and the provision of special incentive and support packages for the elderly are among the municipality's plans to turn the capital into an age-friendly city," the Director General Of Tehran Municipality's Health Department, Hamid Saheb, noted.

"Tehran Municipality's Directorate General of Health has been selected as the secretariat of the age-friendly city since 2015. For this purpose, the General Department of Health plans to implement the legal decessions to maintain and promote physical, mental, social and spiritual health of the elderly. Increasing the social participation of the elderly, empowering them, developing the necessary infrastructures in line with the new approaches of the mayor of Tehran to provide equitable access to health services for the elderly in Tehran, especially in less privileged neighborhoods, have been taken into account," he stated.

Emphasizing that the development of the Tehran's Elderly Center and the provision of special incentive and support packages for the elderly are another programs of the capital, Saheb said, " Holding elections and selecting activists, identifying lonely and isolated elderly people in all neighborhoods of Tehran through health houses, and setting up a cultural center (nursing home) to promote health and increase the vitality of the elderly were other measures that have been carried out in this period of urban management."

He went on to say that the identification of needy and underprivileged elderly by members of the Neighbourhood Elderly Centre ( NEC), increasing the participation of the elderly in social and sports activities by conducting special programs, organizing health tourism tours and holding walking events for the elderly have also been on the agenda.
