Iran (IMNA) - Isfahan has always been a splendid trading hub and it homed many caravanserais, some of which are still used as commercial centers, merchant warehouses and business places, while others have been completely destroyed and turned into other places.
Being located near Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, “Maghsoud Attar” Caravanserai was built on the recommendation of Shah Abbas, by a famous herbalist.
This rectangular square shaped caravanserai with the length of 136 meters, and the width of 60 meters, is surrounded by a couple of two-story rooms with a height of 7.5 meters.
There were a few shops on either sides of the entrance hall of the caravanserai. The lower rooms had porches, and the upper rooms had closets.
The floor of the caravanserai was paved with cobblestones and a large pool built in the middle. There were a few water wells in the corners of the building. There had also been a barn for resting and feeding animals behind the caravanserai.
The spicery shop , belonging to the herbalist who built this caravanserai, lies on the opposite side of the building. Some recommendations to guide the caravans, was written in Nastaliq script in the corners of caravanserai.
These advice include:
"Every traveler needs two things; some money to meet his needs and a sword to keep him safe.”
“If you want to reach the destination, depart at night, as darkness is confidant and day reveals secrets; Days are like brothers and nights are like sisters."
Shah Abbas has built 999 caravanserais throughout the country, out of which 182 rested in Isfahan.
