Iran's best bird watching spot

Gandoman wetland is one of the most beautiful ponds in Iran, sited in Chahrmahal and Bakhtiari Province.

Iran (IMNA) – Chaharmahal and Bakhitari Province has six wetlands lining up like a chain from the southern side of Borujen County to Kalar Mountain. Two of these wetlands naming "Gandoman" and "Choghakhur" are recognized as international natural attractions. Gandoman lagoon is situated near a town under the same name in Borujen County. This beautiful wetland has been inscribed in the International Organization of Seabirds Research in London. It has also been protected by Ramsar Convention. In addition, it should be mentioned that Gandoman pond is in the list of the top 10 bird watching spots in Iran.

This wetland got its name from a historic city located on its northeastern side. Gandoman pond which is sat at an altitude of 2219 meters above sea level, covers an area of 980 hectares. The water of the pond is supplied by rain, snow, Aq Bolagh River, and springs around the lagoon like Gol-e Koochak, Gol-e Bozorg, Moradan, and Nasirabad.

You can see the beautiful meadows on the edge of the Gandoman pond which provide grazing grounds for herds. The wetland also forms a natural habitat for birds, some of which migrate to this area in winter, and others are the permanent residents of the pond.

The migratory birds in the wetland include ducks, cormorant, sandgrouse, plover, herons and ruddy shelduck. Native birds living in the wetland are storks, coot, some bird of prey, and so on. In addition, there are a variety of snakes, frogs, turtles, and mammals like boar, jackal, wolf, bat, fox, and rabbit live in this area. Varieties of plants growing in this area include willow, sedges, common reed, cattail, irises, flowering rush, duckweeds, and etc.

The best time to visit Gandoman pond is in spring and summer, because the weather is often cold and rainy during autumn and winter.
