Zayandehroud River dredging requires budget allocation

“Human encroachments on the riverbed and also unauthorized water withdrawals from conduits and in general miscellaneous natural and human factors prevent the minimum water from reaching the lagoon. In this sense, all signs indicate that the Zayandehroud River and its bedrock forcibly need protection, repair and rehabilitation,” The Head of the Deputy for Monitoring and Supervision of Isfahan’s General Directorate for Environmental Protection said.

Iran (IMNA) - "Therefore, in the last three years we have implemented two dredging projects in order to remove sediments and debris from Zayandehrood River. Despite the limited credit we had in 2018 and 2019, we prioritized dredging operations to remove obstacles to the River route and facilitate intermittent water flow in the river. Although many proceedings have been taken in this direction, the river has not been absolutely cleared because river clearing requires budget allocation,” Hossein Akbari continued.

He considered dredging as an effective measure for the water flow to the wetland and noted, ”this year, the dredging of the Zayandehroud River is being implemented intermittently to remove the barriers to the flow of water, maintain the minimum moisture of the wetland and also prevent dust rising.”

Gavkhouni wetland, the final destination of the Zayandehroud River, is situated to the east of Isfahan. The river that originates in the Zagros Mountains, travels over a long distance to find its salt marsh home.

The vast humid area of Gavkhouni is a natural habitat for different kind of birds like flamingos.

Due to the replenishment of some parts of the lagoon, migratory birds have backed to nest and raise their young. The situation of Gavkhouni wetland provides essential stopover habitat for these birds to refuel, rest, and seek protection from predators before moving on to the next leg of the journey.
