Gavkhouni Wetland waiting to gain international support

“Apropos of distinctive habitat features of Gavkhouni Wetland, it has always been an ideal place for international support” Ali Arvahi, the director of the Conservation of Iranian Wetlands Project remarked.

Iran (IMNA) - “Tourism and community-based nature tourism have been considered as the revenue-generating capacities for wetlands. Giving heed to this capacity would protect the wetland on the one hand and yields direct financial benefits to the local people on the other," he noted.

"Hence, the preservation of the wetlands would become a matter of prime importance for people because their lives and livelihood improvement will be contingent on the wetland life. In this sense, the implementation of the CEPA program will be useful,” the director of Conservation of Iranian Wetlands Project said.

“Gavkhouni’s life simply means the Zayandeh Rood river; Zayandeh Roud is reminiscent of civilization, history and culture as well. As regards distinctive habitat features of Gavkhouni Wetland, it has always been an ideal place for international support. Provided that Isfahan’s General Department of Environment prepare and deliver a plan to the rehabilitation of the wetland, there will be international supports for Gavkhouni Wetland,” Ali Arvahi noted.

“Our goal is not to eliminate farming, but to adapt agriculture and exploitation concerning the water resources in the basin. Actually, creating a balance between wetland protection and sustainable exploitation is the goal of the ecosystem management program. In this regard, there have been a surge of exploitation in agricultural sector in Isfahan Province and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province; In terms of the restoration of Gavkhouni Wetland, this operation with the current method does not provide favourable conditions,” He continued.
