Isfahan; Pre-eminent Creative City of Crafts

Isfahan as the birthplace of 197 types of handicrafts is recognized globally as a point of reference among all creative cities of crafts.

Iran (IMNA) - In 2015, Isfahan was inscribed as the first and also one of the four Iranian cities that have been considered as members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in the fields of handicrafts and folk arts. UCCN was launched in 2004 in order to strengthen cooperation between cities that recognize creativity as a strategic factor in sustainable economic, social, cultural and environmental development.

“Nowadays, human attention towards the development of creative industries brings a kind of innovative point of view to the life. Actually, suffering and atrocities of human life need to be softened through different approaches,” Alireza Rafiei, the Head of the Center for Creativity and Innovation in the Municipality of Isfahan said.

Innovation and creativity are two principal elements of handicraft industries. In this sense, Isfahan as the birthplace of 197 types of handicrafts is recognized globally as a point of reference and pre-eminent among all creative cities of crafts.

UNESCO website announces that considering a hub for folk art and crafts, Isfahan is one of the prominent cities in Iran that its creative sectors comprises the country’s most specialized craft people in different disciplines, including metalwork, carpet weaving, carpentry artwork, ceramics, painting and inlay works of various kinds. According to Isfahan Territorial Planning, at least 9000 craft workshops and enterprises are contributing to Isfahan's economy, majority of which located in Naqsh-e Jahan Square.
