Iranian warship mistakenly hit during naval drills

An Iranian destroyer mistakenly shot and sank a second Iranian frigate during a naval drill Sunday in the Persian Gulf; The Iranian Navy reported one dead and several crew members injured.

Iran (IMNA) - Initial reports claim that a missile was fired from a battle cruise during a military practice and accidentally struck a general-purpose vessel named Konarak that was too close to a target during an exercise.

Officials have not confirmed the number of crew members on board the Konarak, which have recently been added to the Iranian Navy's fleet.

There has been no official statement so far from the Iranian military on whether the shot was sourced by human error or a technical problem.

Iran regularly holds military training and exercises in the region, which is close to the strategic Strait of Hormuz that provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean where ships carry $1.2 billion of oil every day.
