Reflection of history in Arg-e Semnan

One of the most famous attractions in Semnan is the Arg Gate which is the symbol of this city.

Iran (IMNA) – During the reign of Nasser al-Din Shah, the government ordered the military to built a citadel in Semnan, which is known as the Gate of Semnan or Arg-e Semnan: the complex includes several buildings include a telegraph room, Ab Anbar (traditional reservoir of drinking water), a bathroom and etc.

In 1867, when Nasser al-Din Shah stayed in Semnan for three days on his way to Mashhad, he ordered to build a northern gate for the Semnan Arg; therefore, the Gate which nowadays is the only remaining part of Semnan Arg was constructed in 1884 during the reign of the ruler of Semnan, Anushirvan mirza.

The gate has the height of more than seven meters and has two facades on both northern and southern side. The southern façade has an amazing decorative minaret, and seven-color tile decorations were used to build it; so, it is more detailed and elaborated than the northern façade.

The main material which was used to build the main building was brick. The most important characteristic of this gate is the historical images of Rustam and White Div battle with seven-color tiles on the entrance gate.

After the Islamic revolution, this monument was repaired by the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization. The Arg Gate in Semnan was registered in the list of Iran's National Monument in 1980.
