Isfahan to battle desertification

Desertification is a global issue that should be addressed by responsible organizations in Iran, particularly in Isfahan.

Iran (IMNA) - Effective prevention of desertification depends on interventions and polices that promote sustainability of ecosystems. Such interventions should be implemented at national scales, with the active engagement of  local communities. Prevention is a cost-effective method to reverse the desertification processes compare with rehabilitation.

Isfahan province in Iran is now dealing with desertification issues as it is located in Iran's arid region. The study on the composition of Isfahan's air pollutants indicated that the amount of micro-particles over some periods of the year has been reported to be more than the standard criteria; according to the experts' opinion, this might result in a lack of attention to the environment and deserts expansion .

Pointing to 17 June as the "World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought", Fathollah Moein, the head of the Islamic City Council of Isfahan  said,  "the consequences of ignoring environmental issues is threatening all societies, and the lack of proper monitoring and management plans to control the desertification in some of the desert oriented provinces has caused negative consequences."

He continued, "Isfahan is one of the cities at risk of desertification; in recent years, like many other cities, Isfahan has been faced with the damages caused by the increase in the amount of microscopes."

"The dryness of Zayandehrud and not supplying the Gavkhuni wetlands with water will increase the amount of haze particles in the air," he added.

It's time to exterminate the extreme poverty in affected areas and ensuring environmental sustainability. People live in arid areas have a lower quality of life than others inhabited in regions with decent weather. Dry societies are particularly vulnerable as a result of bad weather conditions. So, it’s the duty of all people especially responsible officials to raise awareness about desertification and drought and promote the methods of preventing deserts expansion.
