Restoration of Tabriz Historic Bazaar Started

The grand bazaar of Tabriz, which has been listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, is known for its detailed brickwork and domed ceilings.

IMNA _ About three weeks ago, a massive blaze at Tabriz Bazaar devastated large parts of the key commercial hub on the ancient trade route of Silk Road. It took six hours to extinguish the fire and around 5500 shops at the historic market were damaged due to the disregard of safety measures.

Director General of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of East Azarbaijan province, Morteza Abdar, announced the beginning of the restoration measures of the "Iki Kapili" arcade in the grand bazaar of Tabriz.

After the completion of debris removal operations and depletion of large woody debris by the Municipality of Tabriz, the reconstruction of the arcades will be started with the participation of the tradespeople in this week; the measures include roof mitigation, building reinforcement & strengthening, reconstruction of damaged parts (the vault and dome) and renovation of devastated doors and windows.

"Several meetings have been held with Tabriz Bazaar Board of trustees over the past few weeks to advance the protection and restoration strategies, as well as to examine the problems posed by the business community. We are seeking to meet the tradespeople's needs as soon as possible," Morteza Abdar said.

Tabriz Bazaar is one of the oldest markets in the Middle East which was considered as the main commercial centers during the Safavid era. It is also the largest covered bazaar in the world that covers about 7 square kilometers.
