Animation about Iran among 26 features submitted for 90th Oscar race

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences approved 26 animation feature submissions for the 90th Oscar race. An animation about Iran 'Window Horses the Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming', written and directed by Ann Marie Fleming, is among the first lineup.

The animation is about a young Canadian poet Rosie Ming with Chinese and Iranian parents who travel to Iran to perform at a poetry festival.

The animated piece is based on Fleming's graphic novel 'Window Horses: The Poetic Epiphany of Rosie Ming'. Funding for the film was raised through an Indiegogo campaign, which amassed more than $80,000 in 50 days, from 730 contributors in 28 countries.

It won the Best BC Film Award and Best Canadian Film Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival's BC Spotlight Gala, as well as the Jury Prize at the Bucheon International Animation Festival. In November, it received the Centennial Best Canadian Film or Video Award at the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. On December 7, 2016, the film was named to the Toronto International Film Festival's annual Canada's Top 10 list.

'Window Horses' was presented with Audience Award at the 2016 Animasyros-International Animation Festival, and was named Best Picture by the Canadian Association of Online Film Critics. Most recently, the flick was presented with the Human Rights Award at the 2017 RiverRun International Film Festival.

For the first time, nominations voting in the Animated Feature Film category is open to the entire eligible voting membership.

Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on January 23, 2018 and the awards will be given on March 4, 2018.

The other feature animated films which are submitted include 'The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales', 'Birdboy: The Forgotten Children', 'The Boss Baby', 'The Breadwinner' and 'Captain Underpants The First Epic Movie'.
