To screen foreign films in Iran or not?

Iranian films are still dealing with censorship although they usually observe red lines, so how foreign films are to be screened in Iran?

According to IMNA, screening foreign films in Iran has attracted high attention among filmmakers these days. Iranian cinema may not have favorable conditions to show non-Iranian movies, mostly because there are many Iranian films being accused of crossing the red lines.

There are different reasons behind proponents and opponents’ viewpoints about screening foreign films in the country; reasons are each justifiable if investigated solely. The opponents predict the days in which Iranian cinema receives less interest and more censorship, so they tend to disagree. The proponents, however, see the other side of the coin and consider it as privilege to keep up with the latest cinematic industry as well as retain the cinematic interactions with the world cinema.

Alireza Tabesh, head of Farabi Cinema Foundation, told Cinema-Cinema analytics news site about screening foreign films:

“The issue should be discussed from different perspectives. I believe such films needs a pre-defined framework. The screening of these sorts must not result in disappointment in Iranian filmmakers, otherwise domestic movies will be harmed without taking Iranian cinema potentials into consideration”.

Abdollah Alikhani, an Iranian producer, says in this regard: non-Iranian movies require detailed planning in a way not to paralyze our own cinema industry, instead act as a healthy competition.

The producer asked: How can a foundation, which bans Iranian licensed films from screening, pave the ground to show the world latest films?

“Of course we will never prevent those who create obstacles for the cinema”, he declared.
