Trump’s Economic Pressure Campaign Against Iran Backfires

Iran’s Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati says US President Donald Trump’s efforts to trigger an economic collapse in Iran have instead contributed to the political setback of his own party in the United States.

Iran (IMNA) – In remarks published on Wednesday following the Republican Party’s electoral defeat, Hemmati said Washington’s attempts to weaken Iran’s economy and force its collapse within two weeks had ultimately resulted in the party being politically sidelined in the US Congress.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on February 14, 2026, that Iran would face a severe economic crisis if its oil exports fell to 100,000 barrels per day. He reiterated Washington’s economic pressure campaign in mid-September, declaring, “We are going to bring Iran to its knees economically.”

On October 27, Bessent predicted that Iran’s economy would collapse within two weeks. A day later, he published an image indicating a targeted exchange rate of 300,000 tomans per US dollar in Iran.

Hemmati also noted that one month had passed since the Central Bank launched its foreign exchange intervention in the banknote market, adding that experts were now in a better position to evaluate the policy’s effects on the country’s currency market.
