Iran: US blockade, aggression responsible for maritime insecurity in Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s representative to the United Nations Security Council has condemned the United States and the Israeli regime for waging a “brutal war of aggression” against Iran and imposing an illegal naval blockade, describing Washington’s actions as the root cause of maritime insecurity in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran (IMNA) – Addressing a Security Council meeting on maritime security, Gholamhossein Darzi rejected Western attempts to hold Tehran responsible for disruptions in the strategic waterway, stressing that Iran has consistently upheld freedom of navigation as a responsible coastal state for decades.

“Regrettably, at today's meeting, some speakers have once again ignored the root causes of the current situation,” Darzi said, adding that responsibility for any disruption, obstruction or interference with maritime navigation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz rests directly with those who launched aggression against Iran and those supporting their actions.

He stressed that attempts to shift responsibility onto Tehran were unfounded and lacked credibility.

The Iranian diplomat noted that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime trade routes, remained entirely open and secure until February 28, 2026, when the United States and the Israeli regime launched what he described as a “brutal war of aggression” against Iran, deliberately targeting the country's civilian and maritime infrastructure, ports and vessels.

Darzi cited several incidents involving attacks on Iranian maritime assets to illustrate the consequences of US military actions.

On April 19, 2026, US forces attacked the Iranian commercial vessel Tuska. On May 23, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it had redirected 100 commercial vessels as part of efforts to enforce its naval blockade against Iran.

He also referred to the July 23 attacks by US forces on two Iranian search and rescue vessels, Naji 15 and Naji 16, inside Iran's territorial waters while they were conducting humanitarian operations.

The envoy further stated that Washington had maintained a comprehensive blockade on all maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports since April 12, 2026.

Darzi described the US military enforcement of the blockade as a flagrant violation of Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a serious breach of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the political independence of states.

He also warned of the blockade's humanitarian consequences, saying it threatened civilians' access to food, medicine, fuel and other essential supplies.

“The US blockade threatens civilian access to food, medicine, fuel, and other essential supplies, imposes collective punishment, and deprives them of essential needs indispensable to their survival,” he said.

Reaffirming Tehran's position, the Iranian representative stressed that any restrictions or security measures adopted by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz were defensive and lawful.

“As a coastal state, Iran has the legitimate right under international law to take all necessary and appropriate measures to protect its sovereign rights, its territorial integrity, its people, and its vital national interests against the US ongoing threat or aggression,” he declared.

Darzi called for full accountability for violations of international law and the damage inflicted on Iranian civilians, urging the Security Council to end its silence and explicitly demand that Washington immediately cease its unlawful actions.

He concluded by emphasizing that Iran would pursue all available legal avenues to ensure those responsible were held accountable.
