Iran (IMNA) – In a post on his X account on Sunday, Qalibaf indicated that the proposed body, which he called the Persian Gulf Data Authority, would operate along similar lines to the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, established by Iran following the US-Israeli aggression against the country earlier this year to oversee shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
“The Persian Gulf Data Authority is coming. To governments, funds, and firms in the region: you are kindly advised to give no resources to any AI or data company aiding invasions or killing children,” Qalibaf wrote.
The announcement follows repeated warnings by Iranian officials that Tehran would expand its measures to pressure Washington into lifting its maritime blockade against Iran and permanently ending its aggression.
Iranian authorities have indicated that these measures could extend to data-transfer infrastructure in the Persian Gulf that is owned or shared by major US technology companies.
During the 39-day US-Israeli aggression, which ended in mid-April, Iran carried out limited attacks on data centers operated by US companies in regional countries. Tehran said the attacks were in response to US and Israeli strikes on banking data and artificial intelligence infrastructure in Iran.
Qalibaf also warned regional countries against providing support to the United States and its affiliated internet and data companies, cautioning that such assistance could expose them to severe Iranian retaliation.
“No finance, equity, land and energy… Assist them and face our enforcement,” he said.
The proposed authority signals Iran’s intention to extend its approach to regulating strategic flows in the Persian Gulf beyond maritime traffic to include digital data infrastructure. However, further details about the authority’s structure, operational framework and implementation timeline have not been announced.
