Iran (IMNA) – Araghchi made the remarks during a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in New York on Friday, on the sidelines of the ۸۱st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
During the meeting, the two foreign ministers exchanged views on a range of issues, including bilateral relations in various fields such as politics, economy, trade, transportation, and energy, as well as coordination within international organizations.
Araghchi praised Russia’s responsible position in opposing US unilateralism and what he described as the misuse of international organizations to exert pressure on independent nations.
The foreign ministers of Iran and Russia also discussed developments in the West Asia region following the United States’ repeated withdrawal from its commitments and its violation of the terms and conditions of the Islamabad understanding.
Araghchi briefed Lavrov on the latest developments in the negotiations and the understanding reached between Iran and Oman concerning the establishment of a safe shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz. He also discussed ongoing efforts by mediators to establish the necessary conditions for a return to the diplomatic process.
The Iranian foreign minister said that the current insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz is a direct consequence of the United States’ breach of its commitments and its criminal actions against Iran. He also recalled Iran’s good faith during the negotiations that resulted in the agreement to end the war.
Araghchi emphasized that, just as the Islamic Republic of Iran has demonstrated seriousness in the diplomatic arena, it remains determined to defend its national interests and security and to prevent the United States from exploiting the Strait of Hormuz as a means of threatening Iran’s national security.
For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Russia’s principled position condemning the military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as attempts by the US and its allies to instrumentalize international organizations in pursuit of their own agendas. He stressed the importance of all countries adhering to international law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
