Iran (IMNA) - At the same time, the reconstruction effort is generating new demand for Iranian technology companies that provide equipment, engineering services and technical solutions for the oil and gas sector.
Engineers, technology firms and specialized manufacturers are being organized around practical needs arising from damaged oil, gas and petrochemical facilities, including damage assessment, equipment repair and reconstruction, intelligent systems and the restoration of operational infrastructure.
The Oil Industry Innovation and Technology Park is playing a coordinating role in this process by identifying technical and operational challenges and connecting them with knowledge-based and technology companies capable of developing solutions.
The goal goes beyond supplying replacement parts. It includes adapting existing technologies, developing new products and moving successful solutions toward commercial production.
For these companies, reconstruction is creating a pathway in which domestic technology firms address specific industrial problems, while successful solutions can develop into products and long-term industrial contracts.
The scale of Iran’s domestic capabilities is evident at South Pars, where the gas complex operates 13 refineries and accounts for nearly 70 percent of the country’s energy supply basket, according to its managing director, Gholamabbas Hosseini.
Maintaining the complex’s equipment is therefore closely connected to the reliability of Iran’s national gas system.
As preparations for the coming winter continue, Hosseini said 100 percent of the parts and equipment needed for this year’s major maintenance operations have been supplied by domestic manufacturers, knowledge-based companies and producers of products being manufactured domestically for the first time.
The figure is important not only because of the volume of equipment involved, but also because some of the products have entered domestic production for the first time.
This points to a shift from conventional domestic procurement toward the development of products that previously had to be obtained from foreign suppliers or were not available from Iranian manufacturers.
South Pars provides the industrial environment in which these products must meet the demands of a large-scale gas-processing system. Equipment used in major maintenance operations must be manufactured, delivered and integrated into existing facilities, making actual industrial performance an important part of the technology-development process.
The expansion of this network can also be seen in the Oil Industry Innovation and Technology Park’s work on inactive and low-producing oil wells.
Over the past two years, the park reported that more than 700 closed or low-producing wells had been returned to operation through projects involving domestic technology companies.
The program was based on identifying technical challenges and inviting specialized solutions. A total of 76 technology companies participated, submitting 189 technical and specialized proposals.
These proposals resulted in 18 contracts, 12 of which subsequently entered the implementation stage. More than 60 confidentiality agreements also opened additional areas of cooperation between technology companies and the oil industry.
Together, these figures demonstrate how cooperation between the oil industry and technology companies is increasingly being structured around specific operational and commercial requirements.
Rather than developing technology separately from industrial demand, the model places companies in front of clearly defined challenges and creates a pathway from proposal to contract and, where applicable, deployment.
Reconstruction adds another dimension to this process. Damaged facilities create immediate needs for inspection, repair, replacement equipment and the restoration of operating systems. At the same time, assessments of damaged infrastructure can reveal equipment that requires modernization or technologies that could be redesigned for current operating conditions.
This creates opportunities for companies beyond those traditionally established as oil-sector suppliers.
Manufacturers specializing in equipment, engineering firms, software and intelligent-system developers, as well as companies working in industrial monitoring and automation, can apply their capabilities to the energy sector when those capabilities correspond to identified technical requirements.
A company that successfully supplies equipment to a refinery or gas-processing facility gains an industrial reference, production experience and a better understanding of the technical specifications required by major operators.
These factors can help support subsequent contracts involving maintenance, equipment replacement and modernization.
The same principle applies to products manufactured domestically for the first time. While their initial deployment addresses a specific requirement, continued use can create a domestic market capable of supporting further investment in manufacturing capacity, testing, quality control and technical services.
This is particularly important in the oil and gas sector, where demand for equipment is continuous. Refineries and gas-processing facilities require regular maintenance, replacement parts, upgrades and technical services regardless of whether reconstruction is underway.
South Pars is already using its current maintenance cycle to expand the domestic supply base. Hosseini said the complex is seeking to make maximum use of the capabilities of knowledge-based companies and new technologies to improve equipment reliability, operational efficiency and production stability.
For years, a key challenge for many Iranian technology companies was turning technical expertise into products that industrial customers could actually purchase and deploy.
The current reconstruction effort is placing that challenge within a sector where requirements are immediate, equipment is highly specialized and the consequences of equipment failure can be significant.
This is also changing the relationship between Iran’s oil industry and the technology companies that support it. Instead of developing technologies first and looking for a market afterward, industrial requirements are increasingly helping determine what companies develop.
A refinery requires a particular component, a production unit needs a specific system, or a damaged installation requires assessment and reconstruction. Such requirements give engineers a precise target while providing manufacturers with a concrete basis for investing in solutions.
The reconstruction of damaged energy infrastructure has brought this process into sharper focus. What began as an urgent effort to restore vital facilities is taking place alongside a broader drive to connect Iran’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities with the everyday technical requirements of the energy sector.
The significance of this process ultimately depends not simply on the number of companies described as knowledge-based, but on their ability to produce functional equipment, solve important industrial problems and remain useful after the immediate reconstruction phase has ended.
Developments in Iran’s oil and gas industry indicate that this transition is already underway, creating a technology sector increasingly rooted in industrial requirements while strengthening the domestic technical capabilities available to the country’s energy industry.
