Iran (IMNA) — Iran’s mission to the IAEA issued the response after Grossi raised the issue of inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities during a meeting of the agency’s Board of Governors.
In a statement published on X on Monday, the Iranian mission said it was not meaningful to demand that Tehran implement IAEA safeguards unconditionally while Iranian nuclear facilities remain exposed to attacks or threats of attack.
The mission said Grossi should instead urge the United States and Israel to refrain from attacking or threatening to attack peaceful nuclear facilities that operate under IAEA safeguards.
According to the Iranian side, the current circumstances cannot be separated from the IAEA’s earlier decision to suspend safeguards implementation and withdraw its inspectors from Iran for safety reasons following what Tehran described as unlawful US and Israeli attacks.
Iran’s mission argued that this sequence of events should be taken into consideration when discussing the future of safeguards activities in the country.
The Iranian mission also criticized the IAEA’s reporting, urging the agency to refrain from what it characterized as unprofessional, non-objective, semi-technical and politically influenced reports.
It said that ensuring the security of peaceful nuclear facilities was necessary for the IAEA to resume the conditions required for effective safeguards activities. In this regard, the mission called on Grossi to press Washington and Tel Aviv to end both attacks and threats against facilities operating under IAEA safeguards.
The Iranian mission concluded that, until the IAEA and the United Nations Security Council carry out their respective responsibilities, Iran considers itself entitled to take independent measures to safeguard its national interests.
