In recent months, an unprecedented wave of undocumented Afghans has exited Iran through the Dogharoun border crossing. Reports indicate that government enforcement, changing migration policies, and difficult domestic conditions within Iran have led to the return or deportation of at least one million undocumented Afghans, marking one of the largest refugee outflows in the region’s recent history.

Iran (IMNA) - Authorities have implemented stricter border controls and increased inspections in major cities where many undocumented Afghans reside. Interior Ministry officials have stated that these measures are part of a broader policy aimed at regularizing the status of migrants and encouraging voluntary returns to Afghanistan.

Local news outlets report that Iranian security forces have conducted several large-scale operations to identify and detain undocumented migrants, resulting in mass deportations primarily through the Dogharoun crossing, which links Iran’s northeastern province of Razavi Khorasan with Afghanistan’s Herat province.

The government is reportedly exploring mechanisms to better regulate migration flows and improve bilateral cooperation with Afghanistan to address root causes of irregular migration, including poverty and insecurity in Afghanistan.
