Iranians flocked to polling stations as polls opened at 8 a.m. local time (0430 GMT) on Friday for a snap election following the sudden passing of former President Ebrahim Raiesi in a helicopter crash.
Iran (IMNA) - The polls are set to close at 6:00 p.m., with the possibility of an extension if deemed necessary by the interior ministry.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei kickstarted the voting process by casting his ballot at a polling station in Tehran as soon as voting began. Expressing the significance of the election, he emphasized the importance of citizen participation, stating that the future of the country rests on the people’s choice.
More than 61 million eligible voters have the opportunity to participate in the election, with four remaining candidates in the race after two withdrawals. Former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, a member of parliament from the northwestern city of Tabriz Massoud Pezeshkian, and former interior minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi are vying for the presidential position.
In the event of no clear majority, a second round of voting is scheduled for July 5 between the top two candidates, with the winner set to serve a four-year term.
