Shia pilgrims converged in the holy city of Karbala to pay tribute to Imam Hussain on the occasion on Arbaeen which marks the end of a 40-day of mourning period.
Iran (IMNA) - Millions of Shia Muslims have travelled on foot for days to reach the holy city of Karbala in Iraq to take part in one of the largest annual religious events in the world named Arbaeen.
Arbaeen is observed 40 days after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (AS) in the Battle of Karbala, which occurred on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar during which warfare is forbidden. The martyrdom of Imam Hussain is recognized as one of the critical moments of Shia Islam.
Although the journey can be strenuous and challenging, this annual pilgrimage brings together million Muslims from across the world.
To facilitate the pilgrimage, volunteers setup makeshift stalls all along the roads to distribute essentials such as food, water and beds.
This year is the first time since the COVID -19 pandemic emerged in 2020 that Arbaeen took place without restrictions or a cap on foreign pilgirams.
