The Arba'een is the world's largest peaceful gatherings of people in the holy city of Karbala, Iraq; the event is held every year 40 days after the day of Ahura that marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Iran (IMNA) - Millions of black-clad Iranian pilgrims are converging on the holy city of Karbala to attend the Arba'een religious commemoration, the largest annual gathering of Muslims anywhere on the planet.
The pilgrims carry green, black and red flags, with the black flag of mourning for Imam Hussein by far the most common as the sign of respect and deep sorrowfulness. There have been provided temporary tents along the main routes leading to Karbala for pilgrims praying, eating and sleeping.
Pilgrims from all over the world head for Karbala, Iranians being much the most numerous, many of the whom are teenagers or in their twenties.
