Muslims around the world will welcome the Hijri New Year this evening, which marks the beginning of Muharram, one of the four holy months of the Islamic calendar.
Iran (IMNA) - The Hijri New Year begins with the sighting of the new moon at sunset. The first month of the year marks the anniversary of the historic Battle of Karbala on the day of Ashura, 680 AD, where the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, Hussein, was murdered and beheaded during an unfair battle; the first 10 days of Muharram is observed by Shia Muslims across the world.
Imam Hussain's murder is regarded as the symbol of symbol of resistance against tyranny and injustice. Iranian Muslim communities perform some rituals during the 10 days of Muharram displaying public expressions of mourning.
