Ali Qapu, a wonderful palace at the heart of Isfahan's historical zone, was built at the end of 16th century as a residence for Shah Abbas I during the Safavid era.
Iran (IMNA) - The palace is situated on the western side of Naghshe Jahan square, opposite to Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque. It was constructed in 38 meters high, elevated in 6 storey and featuring 18 slender columns. This magnificent palace served as a monumental gateway to the royal palaces that lay the parkland beyond and also it used to be a parlor to entertain noble visitors and foreign ambassadors. For the first time, Shah Abbas celebrated Nowruz (Iranian New Year) in this majestic palace.
In addition, one of the most amazing points about Ali Qapu is its terrace affording and giving visitors a chance to enjoy a unique and glorious perspective over Naghshe Jahan Square, mountains and landscapes beyond!
Ali Qapu is rich in naturalistic wall paintings such as floral, animal and bird motifs painted by Reza Abbasi, the court painter of Shah Abbas I. This palace has been decorated with many valuable paintings and mosaics and the real highlight is a music hall on the upper floor (the sixth floor). The stunning stucco decoration in motifs of vase and rose-water shakers surprises everyone. Safavid rulers used to watch polo matches (Chowgan), maneuvers and horse-racing games in Naghshe Jahan Square through the music hall.
