The Khajoo Bridge is one of the historical bridges over the Zayandeh-Rood River in Isfahan. It was constructed on the foundation of an older bridge, in 1650, during the era of Shah Abbas II. This Bridge was not built only for the purpose of transportation, but also used as weir. It is served as a teahouse and also a shady place to rest, therefore, it was termed as world's multifunctional bridge.
Isfahan (IMNA) - The fantastic construction idea and the Persian architecture have made it a famous bridge in the world. This bridge used to be a connection road between the Zoroastrian temples and north bank of the river.
Khajoo Bridge has an interesting structure with133 meters long, 12 meters width that contains 23 arches inside. The materials used to construct this bridge are bricks and stones with length of two meters. The distance between the ceiling base and each channel is about 21 meters.
This monument which was built in semi-circular forms is decorated with beautiful paintings and tile works. There is a pavilion located in the center of the bridge where Shah Abbas used to sit there and enjoy the beauties. Today, the only remnant from the king's stone thrown is an elevated stone.
As you can see in the pictures, the water flow of Zayandeh-Rood River is regulated by some sluice gates located under the archways to control the water levels and flow rates. In the past, these sluice gates were closed to raise the water level behind the bridge and facilitate the irrigation of the gardens along the river,.
