‘Alam’ is the most important symbol of Iranian mourning. The ceremony starts with preaching inside a mosque, then some Sayyids carry the ‘Alams’ into the mosque while others are singing threnody. The tradition is continued with installing the ‘Alams’ at particular spots. The pictures show the ceremony in Birjand, capital of South Khorasan province in north-eastern Iran.
