Iran FM Calls for Collective Regional Security Pact Free of Foreign Military Presence

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for the establishment of an inclusive, home-grown security mechanism among Persian Gulf coastal states, emphasizing that lasting regional peace and security should be achieved without foreign military intervention.

Iran (IMNA) - Araghchi made the remarks during a meeting with Iraq's top security official, Qasim al-Aboudi, in Baghdad, where the two sides held consultations on bilateral cooperation, particularly in the field of security.

During the meeting, al-Aboudi described Iran's support for Iraq in the fight against ISIL and terrorism as unforgettable and paid tribute to the late anti-terrorism commanders Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

Araghchi congratulated Iraq on its new government and briefed al-Aboudi on regional security developments following the signing of the memorandum of understanding to end the U.S.-Israeli imposed war. He described the U.S. and Israeli military aggression against Iran as a war against the entire region and accused the United States of repeatedly violating the Islamabad MoU and failing to honor its commitments.

The Iranian foreign minister stressed the importance of regional countries working toward an endogenous mechanism based on regional consensus to establish sustainable peace and security without foreign military interference. He also expressed Iran's readiness to cooperate with fellow Persian Gulf littoral states in creating a collective security arrangement encompassing security, economic, and developmental cooperation.

Addressing the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said Iran would take the necessary measures in accordance with its responsibilities and, under Article 5 of the MoU, would cooperate with Oman as a coastal state while consulting other regional countries.

The two officials also discussed strengthening joint border security and ensuring the full implementation of the bilateral security cooperation agreement aimed at preventing and combating terrorism.
