Iran-US Talks to Begin Following MoU Signing in Switzerland

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the first round of negotiations between Iran and the United States will begin immediately after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Switzerland later this week.

Iran (IMNA) - Speaking on Monday, Araghchi said that a meeting between the heads of the two countries' delegations is expected to take place in Switzerland on Friday, during which the MoU will be formally signed. He added that the first round of follow-up negotiations will commence immediately afterward.

The foreign minister made the remarks following a meeting with members of the Economic Committee of the Iranian Parliament, where discussions focused on the potential economic benefits of the agreement with the United States.

According to Araghchi, the MoU was virtually signed on Sunday and is expected to generate economic benefits for Iran, although he emphasized that the country will not depend entirely on those benefits to meet its needs.

He stated that negotiations on the lifting of US sanctions against Iran and issues related to the country's nuclear program will be conducted during a 60-day negotiation period, which could be extended if necessary.

Araghchi also stressed that Iran would approach the talks with caution and mistrust due to Washington’s record in previous negotiations.

“We have a history of broken promises, non-compliance, and the tearing up of agreements,” he said.

The top diplomat noted that the MoU signed on Sunday night establishes obligations for both Iran and the United States. He said some of those commitments will begin to be implemented on Monday, while the remaining measures will take effect after the final and official signing of the agreement on Friday.
