Iran (IMNA) - In a statement delivered at the meeting, the Iranian delegation warned that normalizing attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities poses a serious threat to the global non-proliferation regime and international security.
The delegation described the attacks against nuclear facilities under IAEA Safeguards as the “most extensive and unprecedented” assaults on such sites since the establishment of the Agency and urged the international community to respond decisively.
Recalling the IAEA’s condemnation of the Israeli regime’s 1981 attack on Iraq’s nuclear facilities, the Iranian delegation noted that the Agency’s Board of Governors and General Conference have repeatedly stated through various resolutions that any attack or threat against safeguarded nuclear facilities violates the United Nations Charter, international law and the IAEA Statute.
According to the Iranian representatives, the United States and the Israeli regime carried out a total of 17 waves of attacks against safeguarded nuclear facilities during the 12-Day and Ramadan wars. They said one of the most dangerous incidents occurred near the Bushehr nuclear power plant, approximately 350 meters from the reactor, resulting in human casualties.
Referring to warnings by the IAEA Director General regarding the potential consequences of a direct attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant, the delegation stressed that such an incident could have caused a widespread release of radioactive materials into the environment.
The Iranian delegation further argued that the attacks undermine the objectives and principles of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the IAEA Statute, while raising serious concerns about the credibility of the international non-proliferation system, particularly the Agency’s safeguards regime.
Iran also called on IAEA member states to avoid politicized and selective approaches, reject double standards, prevent the normalization of attacks on safeguarded nuclear facilities and, if necessary, establish new international rules that would completely prohibit any attack or threat against such sites.
