The Role of Nutrition in Reducing Anxiety and Stress

The Director of the Nutrition Improvement Office at the Iranian Ministry of Health stated that during critical situations when individuals experience worry and anxiety, adhering to nutritional guidelines can help reduce stress, anxiety, and the consequent harm inflicted on the body's health.

Iran (IMNA) - Ahmad Esmaeilzadeh, in an interview with IMNA, emphasized that in times of crisis marked by worry and anxiety, proper nutrition can mitigate stress, anxiety, and the associated health damages.

He added that consuming foods containing fatty acids, specifically omega-3s, can help manage stress and anxiety. These compounds are found in marine food sources such as fish and shrimp, as well as in purslane leaves and walnuts.

The Director of the Community Nutrition Improvement Office further noted that, in addition to marine foods, purslane leaves, and walnuts, certain cooking oils such as canola oil contain omega-3 fatty acids. For individuals who are unable to consume these oils, soybean oil is recommended.

Stating that body weight has a direct impact on stress and anxiety, he explained that obese individuals tend to experience higher levels of stress and anxiety compared to leaner individuals. Therefore, those who are overweight should manage their weight, while underweight individuals should strive to reach a healthy weight.

Esmaeilzadeh stressed that incorporating fruits and vegetables into the daily diet can be effective in reducing levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. In addition to fruits and vegetables, consuming protein from eggs and meat can also help control stress and anxiety to some extent. Thus, following a varied and balanced diet that meets the body's nutritional needs plays a significant role in managing and controlling stress and anxiety.
