Iran (IMNA) - "Addressing the World Health Organization (WHO), Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva has conveyed a stark assessment of the escalating humanitarian and environmental crisis resulting from recent attacks by Israel and America. The Ambassador detailed a devastating toll on Iran’s healthcare infrastructure and civilian population, emphasizing the profound impact on public health and the broader environment.
According to the Ambassador’s statement, the ongoing conflict has tragically resulted in the martyrdom of 21 dedicated healthcare workers – individuals essential to the provision of medical care. Furthermore, the attacks have rendered seven hospitals completely non-operational, severely limiting access to vital medical services for the population. A further 49 medical centers have sustained damage, hindering their ability to provide adequate care. The destruction extends beyond healthcare facilities, with an estimated 81,000 civilian residential units having been destroyed, displacing countless families and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
The Ambassador specifically highlighted two critical areas of concern: attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities and deliberate assaults on Tehran’s oil storage facilities. He asserted that both actions pose a significant and demonstrable threat to public health and the environment. The attacks on nuclear facilities, while intended for other purposes, carry the inherent risk of radioactive contamination and long-term environmental consequences. The deliberate targeting of oil storage facilities, as evidenced by the recent incidents in Tehran, has resulted in widespread pollution, including air and water contamination, posing immediate and long-term health risks to the population and the surrounding ecosystem.
Iran has formally requested the WHO’s urgent intervention and assessment of the environmental and health impacts stemming from these attacks, urging the organization to condemn the actions and advocate for measures to mitigate the damage and protect the well-being of the Iranian people and its environment. The Ambassador underscored the need for international accountability and a commitment to upholding international humanitarian law."
