Iran (IMNA) - Following the Israeli air strikes on the vicinity of Naqsh‑e‑Jahan Square in Isfahan, valuable decorative elements of the Jameh Mosque of Abasi—one of Iran’s principal World‑Heritage assets—suffered damage this morning. The incident has drawn the attention of national and international cultural‑heritage bodies to the most serious threat facing Iran’s historical capital.
Amir Kermzadeh, Director‑General of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts of Isfahan Province, confirmed the event in an interview with Mehr and explained that the vibrations generated by the explosion on Pasdaran Street caused a number of tiles from the northern and western iwans of the Jameh Mosque of Abasi to dislodge. Protective teams were dispatched immediately for on‑site assessment.
Kermzadeh emphasized that the significance of this mishap goes beyond physical damage. The Jameh Mosque of Abasi is an integral component of the unified World‑Heritage site of Naqsh‑e‑Jahan Square; any harm to it constitutes not only a national loss but also an injury to the cultural heritage of humanity.
