Iran (IMNA) - Spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei revealed that over 15 draft proposals for exiting the NPT have been submitted by Parliament members reacting to what they consider illegal actions by the European troika in activating the snapback provision of the 2015 nuclear deal. He noted that while the commission approved one comprehensive plan, it has not yet been scheduled for parliamentary review.
According to this draft, if the snapback mechanism is enforced, the Iranian government would formally notify the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors about its official withdrawal from the NPT.
Rezaei emphasized that under the current conditions, Iran sees no justification for remaining a party to the NPT. He argued that despite obligations within the NPT and the IAEA’s statutes to assist Iran’s nuclear development, such support has not materialized. Iran has allowed extensive inspections to demonstrate the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, but the IAEA has failed in its commitments, leading to pretexts for attacks against Iran.
“We have seen no benefits from our membership in the NPT or cooperation with the IAEA, and therefore do not see a reason to continue,” Rezaei stated.
Addressing statements by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, head of the Supreme National Security Council, who declared that Iran will not exit the NPT, Rezaei reaffirmed Parliament’s independence: “Withdrawal from the NPT requires national consensus. The representatives of the Iranian people sit in Parliament, not the government, and the president cannot dictate Parliament’s decisions.”
