Iran (IMNA) - This follows the UN Security Council’s vote rejecting a resolution to permanently lift sanctions tied to Iran’s nuclear program, with nine members opposing the measure, and Russia, China, Pakistan, and Algeria supporting it. If no agreement is reached, UN sanctions will be reinstated by September 28.
The Ministry stated that the European actions undermine diplomatic efforts and occur amid Israeli and US attacks on Iran’s safeguarded nuclear facilities, which Tehran condemns as violations of the UN Charter jeopardizing peace and the non-proliferation regime. The E3 countries have been accused of ignoring these aggressions and misusing the JCPOA dispute mechanism, completing the revival of canceled UN resolutions and damaging diplomacy.
Blaming the US and the E3 for misrepresenting facts and pressuring Council members, Iran emphasized that the measure lacked consensus and harms the UN’s credibility and the non-proliferation framework. Tehran reiterated its nuclear program’s peaceful nature, its right to scientific progress, and its readiness to defend its rights diplomatically while reserving the right to respond to unlawful acts.
In a related development, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke with IAEA Director Rafael Grossi about cooperation and the snapback dispute. Araghchi criticized the politicization of IAEA sessions and stressed Iran’s commitment to technical cooperation under international rules, rejecting unfair political pressures that raise tensions. This followed a new IAEA cooperation agreement signed on September 9, which had resumed after suspension due to Israeli-American attacks and Iran’s protest against anti-Iran resolutions at the IAEA.
Tehran has warned that continuation of the snapback mechanism threatens the implementation of this new cooperation deal.
