IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi Accused of Politicizing Iran’s Peaceful Nuclear Program, Undermining Agency’s Mandate

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is facing strong criticism for allegedly abandoning the agency’s technical and impartial mandate to pursue a politically driven agenda influenced by the United States and Israel.

iRAN (imna) - The IAEA was founded to promote peaceful nuclear energy and ensure compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which guarantees states the right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful use. However, under Grossi’s leadership, the agency has been accused of transforming into a political tool that fosters suspicion and delegitimizes Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran insists is fully peaceful.

Critics point to Grossi’s pattern of unprofessionalism, selective demands, and reliance on unverified intelligence, often sourced from Israel—a country not party to the NPT and possessing an undeclared nuclear arsenal. Instead of confidential diplomatic engagement, Grossi has publicly amplified allegations against Iran through the media and social platforms like X (formerly Twitter), escalating tensions and undermining diplomacy.

Mohammad Eslami, Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, condemned Grossi’s actions as “destructive” and lacking neutrality. He asserted that Grossi’s biased reporting and unrealistic demands fabricated pretexts for Israel’s June 13, 2025, military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities—actions which coincided with indirect nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington mediated by Oman.

Iranian intelligence claims that Grossi coordinated closely with Israeli officials, raising questions about the impartiality of the IAEA under his direction. This collaboration allegedly enabled the political environment necessary for the unlawful Israeli aggression that resulted in significant casualties and damaged key nuclear and civilian infrastructures.

While intensifying scrutiny on Iran’s nuclear activities, Grossi has remained silent on Israel’s uninspected nuclear arsenal, exposing a stark double standard and political bias. This selective approach undermines the agency’s credibility and contradicts its founding principles of non-proliferation and peaceful nuclear development.

The ongoing climate of suspicion fostered by Grossi’s tenure has contributed to sustaining severe economic sanctions on Iran, which have inflicted widespread humanitarian suffering by limiting access to medicines and essential technologies.

Grossi’s role, described by Iranian officials as a betrayal of the IAEA’s mission, has drawn sharp condemnation for turning the agency from a neutral overseer into an instrument of geopolitical pressure and intelligence manipulation. The future of nuclear diplomacy and verification, critics argue, depends on restoring the agency’s impartiality and commitment to its original peaceful objectives.
