Iran (IMNA) - Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed Iran’s attendance and stated that both he and the president will deliver speeches. Araghchi emphasized during an IRIB interview that the summit must go beyond condemnations, as “it is time for action, and words alone are no longer enough.”
The summit follows Israel’s missile attack on Doha last Tuesday targeting senior Hamas leaders. The strike killed relatives and aides of Hamas officials, but failed to assassinate top resistance leaders. This marked the first Israeli assault on Qatari territory and was widely condemned. Qatar has called for a collective regional response. The UN Security Council also condemned the airstrikes, while Qatar’s prime minister-led delegation criticized the attack as an attempt to undermine Gaza ceasefire talks.
Araghchi recalled Iran’s previous calls at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation meeting in Jeddah for concrete measures, including severing ties with Israel, ending economic cooperation, threatening those aligned with Israel and the West, and imposing sanctions. He stressed these steps remain necessary and rejected reliance on mere rhetoric and resolutions. According to Araghchi, “The people of Gaza do not need fiery speeches. They need food, water, medicine, and, above all, their rights, their land, and the ability to decide their own future.” He also stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had revealed Israel’s true nature, which has become evident to both people and governments in the region as the Zionist regime being the main threat.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told CNN that the summit will decide the next course of action and expressed hope for a “collective regional response” to Israel’s attack. The strike coincided with Hamas officials’ discussions over the latest US-endorsed Gaza ceasefire proposal.
Since breaching a ceasefire in March, Israel has killed 12,170 Palestinians, raising the death toll in Gaza to 64,718 since the war began in October 2023. Israel has imposed a tight blockade on the territory, leading the UN to declare an official famine due to the lack of food and essential supplies.
